Local Conditions in Pembroke That Impact Underground Tank Removal

Pembroke sits along the Ottawa River where the Muskrat and Indian Rivers meet the main channel, with river terraces, low-lying floodplains, and urban neighbourhoods built on Ottawa Valley clays and sand deposits—conditions that can influence underground storage tank (UST) removal and remediation plans.

  • Soil Type: Ottawa River valley clays, silts, and sand/gravel terraces are common across Pembroke. In some areas, tighter clays and silty till slow drainage and can hold petroleum in finer layers; in others, coarser sands allow faster vertical migration of fuel toward groundwater. Our work plans account for these contrasts with staged excavation, careful segregation and stockpiling of soils, and targeted testing at depth to follow any impacted material along stratigraphic boundaries.
  • Water Table & Proximity to Waterways: Large portions of Pembroke drain directly to the Ottawa River, Muskrat River, and Indian River, with mapped floodplains and areas known to have experienced past flooding and high water. In these zones, groundwater can be seasonally elevated, and any leak from a buried tank may move laterally toward nearby rivers, creeks, wetlands, or municipal intakes. We factor local groundwater conditions, potential dewatering, and erosion/sediment controls into our UST removal plans and complete confirmatory sampling to document that sensitive receptors are protected.
  • Regulatory & Real-Estate Considerations: Within the City of Pembroke, excavation and site restoration are regulated through the Building Department and related permitting processes, which review work for compliance with the Ontario Building Code and local bylaws. Properties in mapped floodplains or near steep riverbanks may face additional constraints or design considerations. Real-estate transactions, especially for older oil-heated homes or commercial sites, frequently require written environmental clearance showing that any UST has been properly removed and the site assessed in line with MECP/TSSA requirements. We coordinate utility locates, permitting, and documentation so your project satisfies both municipal and provincial expectations.

We bought an auto repair shop with an old oil tank that left contamination under the floor and footing. SOS handled everything perfectly. Cam and Levi are friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. Communication was clear and honest — no runaround, just straight answers. If you need remediation done right the first time, these are the people to call. As shop owners, we know the value of fixing things right — and that’s exactly what SOS does.

Cam and his crew were exceptionally easy to work with. Our garage was in bad shape and we had planned on utilizing SOS and the team for months. They came and demolished our garage in such a professional manner. Cam came and worked hard all day because he didn't want to let any of his clients down. Even while the night prior there was a huge windstorm and he had to delegate all the various jobs that need prioritizing. The clean up was done effectively and the team works fast and they are a lot of fun as well. Last minute Ryan and I decided a deck would be a great addition. I literally just asked Cam and he said he would come back the following week and build us a beautiful deck where our old leaky garage once stood. The cost of his work is very reasonable. I cannot thank him and his team for all the hard work they did for us!! Lots of appreciation Leiann and Ryan
