In most cases, underground fuel storage tanks (UFSTs) are utilized exclusively for fuel dispensing purposes. These tanks fall under the governance of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) in Ontario. TSSA regulations mandate that if a buried tank has been inactive for over two years, it must be removed. The process of underground tank removal involves two key components:
1. Tank and Piping Removal: TSSA-licensed contractors are responsible for the safe removal of the tank and all associated piping.
2. Soil Sampling and Reporting: Following tank removal, the soil surrounding the tank undergoes thorough sampling. A technical report of findings is then prepared by a Qualified Person (QP), recognized by the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
